…ship captains in general are no better qualified to perform legally recognized marriage ceremonies than a grocer, car salesman, interior decorator, etc.? I asked Brad if he knew that and he looked worried. I don’t know what he thought I did or intended to do, but it’s one of those interesting facts I learned while researching the historical part of “Isle.”
If a passenger jumped or fell into the ocean from the deck while wearing a cork lifejacket they would more likely than not break their neck as a result. Kapok is more forgiving, but when compressed it loses buoyancy and after several hours in the water becomes saturated and will sink its wearer like a stone. It’s highly flammable as well.
Of course this is not nearly as interesting as what I learned when researching poisons for one of my novels. I had no idea how incredibly dangerous a single uncooked kidney bean is. Or green potatoes. Or so many other foods! I came to the conclusion during my research that a diet of Twinkies would be safer than fresh fruits and vegetables. Alas, I do not like Twinkies so I’ll stick with a latte diet. I’m about due for one now, as a matter of fact!
This post has nothing to do with 601 Suspense Street, book 2 in the Mystery Lane series. I took a few minutes to create the cover (I know Anika, that’s not exactly the truth, I spent several hours on it). So, thought I’d share.
Happy reading, and now I’m off to make another latte! And then, I’m going to get back to writing 601…
